Time: One hour

Action Step #1 – Grab pen and paper, or turn on your computer and open a blank document.

Action Step #2 – Write like you talk. Spend about ten to fifteen minutes writing a scene. Don’t edit yourself and don’t stop to make changes. Simply allow the voice inside your head to come out onto the paper.  When you write like you speak, your writing tends to flow and connect better with your audience than if you try to match a style or exude a specific voice.

Action Step #3 Record it. Grab a voice recorder or use the microphone on your iPod or iPhone if you have one.  Read aloud what you wrote. Play it back and listen.

Action Step #4 Reverse the procedure. Record your scene first on a digital recorder and then transcribe it.  How different are the two styles of writing?  Which is better?
